Santo Domingo de la Calzada to Belorado

13.9 miles

One word for today. WINDY. And Exhausting. Ok that’s 2 words. We’re talking non-stop headwind of over 20 mph and gusting up to about 30 mph. For 13.9 miles.

The good news is that there were 4 towns en route for resting & refreshment. The additional good news was our albergue-hotel, where we were greeted with fresh orange juice and our packs were taken to the room! They told us the high wind was Not the norm for the area.

Cold Start

Heading out at 7am, we were immediately greeted with cold temperatures (44°F) and winds of about 20 mph. There’s nothing like it to motivate a quick step! We reached the first town in about an hour and a half and we’re greeted by music and a cafe where hot coffee awaited us! Also potato tortilla, bread, and orange juice. Fresh squeezed! This is the norm in Spain. Fresh squeezed OJ. Always amazing and so refreshing!

Entering Granon, hoping for hot coffee!

Small Towns

This was also a day of interesting towns which not only gave us respite from the wind, but provided delicious eats and charming sights.

  • Granon welcomed us wlith a fanciful mural, and hot coffee to warm our hands and tummies
  • Redecilla del Camino offered us a lovely church, sculptures and varied signage
  • Viloria de la Rioja is believed to be the birthplace of Santo Domigo de la Calzada.

Comforting End (Inn)

The Hotel-Albergue A Santiago was our oasis at the end of this very tiring day. We were able to wash our clothes and sit outside in the sun to enjoy a mid-afternoon meal. With wine…of course! And bread…of course!

Outdoor dining

Blogging, photos and booking future stays take up the rest. Then a walk into the old city and a good night’s rest!
