Belorado to San Juan de Ortega

15 miles

Today we were in a bit of “race mode.” We coildn’t make a reservation at the Monastery in San Juan so we left earlier than usual and moved along at a good pace to ensure we had a bed for the night.

We passed through the first town and paused briefly in Villambistia for a “to go” croissant and a banana to keep us going. The morning was cold, but at least there wasn’t a gale blowing!

As the sun rose, we passed through fields over rolling hills which seem too vast to capture with a photograph.  But then, this seems to be true with all of the vista’s we’ve seen. Our eyes truly are miraculous sensors!

Walking Solo

We had traveled about halfway and needed to refuel, so decided to stop in Villafranca for some real nourishment! With the other half still in front of us, Dale went on at a faster pace and was soon far ahead of me.

The landscape had also changed, with a steep ascent to thick pine forests. Walking alone, my thoughts were of my family, especially my children. The weather was sunny and mild, and I took in small things like a grasshopper with blue wings, large bright green lizards, and the fragrance and dark green of the pines.

Coming up and around a curve, I could hear music and saw signs, then an outpost set up for pilgrims who needed a rest and refreshment. There had been another, smaller outpost further back along the way as well. More camino provisions!

Arrival

Dale had been texting me from time to time, checking in on my pace, and I wasn’t doing too badly! Only about 25 minutes behind, by the time I arrived. He was standing in line at the Monastery and we were able to check in, get our beds set up and relax.

We enjoyed a great meal at the cafe next door and some really good Sangria! More in line with what I like to make (those familiar…take note!)  We went to the pilgrim mass, which was led by a teen group on tour. The music was a true delight and performed with obvious joy!

Then, a smaller snack before going to sleep with our dorm-mates…all 22 of them!
