16.5 Miles
This was a big day! We had a stiff ascent to reach the Iron Cross (Cruz de Ferro) where we placed our rocks, an emotional moment. Some others there at the same time shed tears, were quiet, or jubilant.
From there, we ascended further to the highest point on the Camino. We thought our trek across the Pyrenees qualified for that, but this reached to 4,970 feet. We walked along a ridge that gave us awesome mountains views…our favorite day after the trek over the Pyrenees. It was a spectacular day! So far.
Coming Down
Then we began a very long descent into Molinaseca. We’re talking down to 2,970 feet over 6.2 miles. Did I mention Zubiri yesterday? This was just as bad…only longer, if not quite as steep. We did have short sections that were level or much less steep, but overall it was a steady downward walk, and exhausting. Dale had walked on ahead of me (aka: the snail) and I was walking with Penny and Graham. As we were coming down both Penny’s and my shins started hurting (my left this time). But we made it in, I iced it, etc., so hope it will be ok for tomorrow!
Molinaseca
Molinaseca is a great town. There is a beautiful old bridge over the river, which the town floods up to the wall in summer, so that folks can swim in it! There were a few swimming in the naturally deeper places when we arrived.
We enjoyed a couple of beers, and then later, a grilled salmon dinner with wine and friends. Early to bed after our big day, to rest up for tomorrow…our longest walk.
