They say that the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. The beginning of our 500-mile journey began with a casual comment from a friend and a description of someone else\u2019s journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And then, it was our journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Progressing from thinking about walking the El Camino de Santiago Compostela, to actually packing for our trip was a go\u2014stop\u2014go process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Our friend who had walked \u201cthe Way\u201d a few years ago, via the Frances route, was a huge help in getting us started in the right direction, by gifting us with what is known among pilgrims as \u201cthe Brierley.\u201d This comprehensive guide, written by the late John Brierley, is intimidating at first glance, and second glance\u2014and even third. But we stuck with it, figured out how it works and it is indeed, an invaluable tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Armed with our Brierley, we began making plans, booking flights, and researching hostels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We found our local chapter of American Pilgrims on the Camino on Facebook, and promptly joined. On their monthly hike, we met many members who had either walked the Camino or were in the planning stages like we were. This incredible group shared everything from photos to tips on footcare, booking albergues (hostels), and what not to miss on the food front. We couldn\u2019t take notes fast enough! They also sponsor a \u201cCamino 101\u201d class with even more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
